Volleyball is in the spotlight this weekend on the University of Saskatchewan campus.

The playoff-bound Saskatchewan Huskies — currently ranked No. 7 nationally for U Sports men’s volleyball with an 11-5 record in the Canada West conference — host the University of British Columbia-Okanagan Heat (9-7).

The Huskies are currently fourth in the Canada West while the Heat are chasing them, two spots back in sixth.

Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan women’s squad — which has been coming on strong early in 2025 — will welcome the UBC-Okanagan team that’s also chasing the Huskies in the Canada West playoff picture.

Saskatchewan currently sits in seventh place at 8-8, while UBC-O is 10th at 4-10.

The Huskies have won 31 sets and lost 28 along the way, while the Heat has won 18 and dropped 31.

Taryn Hannah leads the USask squad with 220 kills, averaging 3.79 per set. She ranks No. 2 in the conference.

Tielle Hagel is also No. 2 in the Canada West. She has averaged 10.03 assists per set.

On the men’s side, Emmett Graham leads the Huskies statistically. He is No. 4 in the Canada West, averaging 3.72 kills per set with a .380 kill-percentage. He is fifth overall with 201 kills.

Ethan Smith is No. 1 in the Canada West with 121 digs. Noah Opseth is second in assists per set, averaging 10.61.

UBC-O is led by Thys Weststrate, who is No. 1 in the conference with a .482 kill-percentage and 1.10 blocks per cent.

The U of S volleyball teams have two weekends of play and four games remaining in the regular season.

The Huskie men will wrap up the regular season at Langley, B.C. against the Trinity Western University Spartans (10-6), who are currently in fifth place.

The women are also in Langley next weekend when they visit the Spartans (6-10).

WOMEN’S HOCKEY AT HOME

The U of S women’s hockey squad is fighting for its playoff life.

The Huskies (4-13-5) host the MacEwan Griffins (3-16-3) Friday and Saturday at Merlis Belsher Place. Game-time is 7 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday.

Saskatchewan sits in fourth place in the Canada West’s East Division, nine points back of the provincial rival Regina Cougars for third place and the final playoff spot.

In Canada West men’s hockey, the Dogs (18-4-0) continue their quest for first place overall when they visit the MacEwan Griffins (9-11-2) Friday and Saturday in Edmonton.

Saskatchewan has moved up to No. 2 nationally, behind the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds, in the U Sports rankings.

BASKETBALL ON THE ROAD

The USask men’s and women’s basketball teams are also in Edmonton to play the MacEwan Griffins.

The Huskie women  (12-2) — ranked No. 4 nationally — play a winless Griffins squad (0-14).

The men (1-13) battle a men’s squad that sits right above them in the standings at 2-12.
