Steelers trade up for surprise QB in new ESPN mock draft

ESPN put together a new three-round mock draft this week, courtesy of NFL draft gurus Mel Kiper Jr. and Field Yates. This is a cool exercise as the two took odds and evens and alternated picks. In this new mock draft, the tandem have the Pittsburgh Steelers trading up for a quarterback. But it isn’t what you think.

No, Kiper and Yates don’t have Pittsburgh trading up in the first round for Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders. They have Sanders coming off the board at No. 9 overall to the New Orleans Saints. They also don’t have the Steelers picking Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart at pick No. 21. Dart going to the Cleveland Browns via a trade with the No. 29 overall pick.

Instead, they have the Steelers sitting tight at No. 21 and going for Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon. This pick is picking up plenty of momentum among the draft pundits.

Pittsburgh did pick a quarterback in the third. To do so, they worked a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. The Steelers sent their third-round pick this year and next year to move up to No. 63. With that pick, the Steelers opt for Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe. Milroe is the fifth quarterback off the board but might be the one with the most upside, thanks to his elite mobility and athleticism.
